A couple of months ago I was listening to some classes from Roots Tech and one class stood out to me more than the others. It was taught by Scott Wilhite, and he gave a great presentation and encouraged us to write our stories.

He told us that our stories deserve to be told, they can help us out, and they can help those people who come after us.

He also emphasized that they should be told by You – with the sincerity of your voice. This will help the reader to know that you are speaking your own truth and they will be able to know you and connect with you. And your life lessons will not only be valuable to others who read them, but as you write them, they become very valuable to you, as you understand them better.

Scott told a true story of a girl who was down in Southern Utah exploring the red rock country and was jumping from rock to rock and accidently jumped off a rock and fell 40 feet. She survived after enduring a very long healing period, but the accident left her as a paraplegic. She had a tough time coming to grips with this and once she finally accepted that this would be her life, she realized that she needed to make the most of her challenges and not let them get her down. She wanted to make a different in the world and so she started volunteer in the local elementary school and would listen to, and help students read. This service gave her a new positive perspective and from there she became a motivational speaker and has been changing lives by sharing her story and her positive outlook on life despite her limitations. The most powerful part of her story is when she explains that every time she tells her story it allows her to look back on her experience, and it reminds her who she has become from it. She said, “Knowing what I know now about who I have become from this experience, if I could go back and change things to be what I want them to be, I would still jump off that cliff.”

She feels this way because she looked back and understood the growth and strength that came from her accident and she feels she is a much better person. AND…Only by telling her story did she realize this and she was able to accept this difficult experience.

When you are ready to write a difficult story, remember to watch for the reasons why the experience made you a better person. Watch for the growth, the lessons, and the blessing that came from it. They are there if you tune-in to them.

By writing your stories, you will come to know yourself better, respect yourself more, understand why life can be hard and how you can benefit from it, and it allows others to learn from your stories.
